When indoor navigation becomes a challenge
This research and development project is part of the RIPARTI initiative implemented by the Apulia Region and aims to lay the methodological foundations for the development of new indoor navigation techniques within wireless networks. The aim is to overcome the limitations of traditional indoor location solutions, which are often tied to dedicated infrastructures, through intelligent use of existing WiFi networks.
The project addresses the typical challenges of intelligent and complex environments, such as urban buildings, offices and production contexts, which are characterised by significant dynamism and an increasing number of connected devices.
INDOOR NAVIGATION
ADAPTIVE WIFI FINGERPRINTING
AI-BASED REASONING
Artificial intelligence and application impact
A core element of the project is the use of artificial intelligence techniques to analyse WiFi signals, information fusion and reasoning under uncertainty. Results include the definition of new fingerprinting methodologies, the creation of proof of concept and the validation of performance in real scenarios.
For N&C, this research activity contributes to the development of advanced skills in the field of WiFi sensing, paving the way for future products and solutions for indoor navigation, intelligent room monitoring and efficient asset management.
Research and innovation approach
The research focuses on the evolution of WiFi fingerprinting techniques, understood as the dynamic representation of network behaviour based on acquired signals. The project introduces an adaptive and dynamic approach that integrates:
- Indoor navigation
- Intelligent exploration of the environment
This makes it possible to improve the quality of navigation and, at the same time, to enrich knowledge of the environment, even under conditions of uncertainty or where there are limitations in available resources.
